Have you watched the movie the Beach with Leonardo DiCaprio? It was filmed in Phi Phi Thailand. The beaches are beautiful, the scuba diving is dream-worthy, and this if you like touristy places Koh Phi Phi in Thailand just might be for you.
How the heck do you get to Koh Phi Phi? You have a few different options depending on where you are coming from. We were coming from my favorite place in Thailand Railay Beach so we took the ferry from the Klong Jirad Pier. I would say it is about a two-hour ride. They have seating inside similar to a bus. I set on the top laid out in the sun and drank a Chang! They sell beer, soda, and snacks on the ferry. The ferry cost about $14 USD. You can book here!
Arriving in Phi Phi? Book your first night when you arrive. It is a tourist nightmare arriving on Phi Phi. If you book ahead your hotel will have someone waiting on the pier for you. You will find this person right before Mcdonalds after you pay the $20 baht. Yes, the party island is not free! Have $20 baht to pay when you arrive. It will make it a quicker process.
Where to stay in Phi Phi? If you are on a budget there are hostels and cheap rooms if you are a baller you have a million choices. We stayed in a cheap room toward the back of the island. we had to walk up 200 steps. It wasn't horrible but I wouldn't do it again. Take my advice above book your first night's room ahead of time! Here are a few tips:
- Book your hotel in advance
- Luxury hotels are far from the island center and pier
- Want to be in the middle of the action?Book close to Tonsai Pier, Nice Beach, or Loh Dalum
- Want to relax? Book a secluded resort
- Want to party? Book Ibiza House
Where to party in Phi Phi? Did I really just type that? Koh Phi Phi is a 24/7 party! I am going, to be honest, we are in our thirties and I am chunky, I felt old. However, after a buy one get one bucket I was partying with the best of them! If you love live DJs, techno, fire shows, and muay Thai you will love Phi Phi! We went to the reggae tourist bar and they host muay Thai fights. They also encourage the tourist to fight each other in the ring! This is a must-do! After a wild night partying get a tattoo from one of the shops. We did and it was with a piece of bamboo! No pain and you can swim right away.
Can you scuba in Phi Phi? Yes, you can. There are dive shops all over the island. The prices were very cheap compared to the cost in the United States. This is one of my biggest regrets is not diving in Thailand.
What about Snorkeling? You must snorkel in Koh Phi Phi! The water is a beautiful turquoise and there are so many beautiful fish. We even saw a shark. We hired a private long-tail boat on the beach the night before. It was $50 for the day after my awesome negation skills. Our captain was awesome, he had all the snorkeling gear we need and a boom box. He took us to all the spots: Hong Island, Monkey Island, Maya Bay Beach, and more places. This is the way to go!
