Bangkok, Thailand: Famous for street food, Buddhist temples, and vibrant street life. If you are traveling to Thailand, this is more than likely your first stop. Keep reading for tips on where to stay, what to eat, and must-visit places near Khaosan Road.
There is a lot to see and do in Bangkok. We usually only spend about 24 hours at the start of our trip and 24- 48 hours at the end of our trip. My recommendation is to stay on Khaosan Road.
The first thing you are going to have to do is get from Suvarnabhumi Airport to your hotel. This is actually fairly easy, ignore all the people yelling taxi when you come out immigration and keep walking past the banks, and down the escalators, you should see a sign that says in English public taxi, follow that sign outside. You will find workers there that ask you where you want to go, give them the address, and they will get you a metered taxi. The drivers are super friendly and love to practice their English with you.
The next thing you have to figure out is where to stay in Thailand! We love staying near Khaosan Road, we like being in the action. If you are not on a tight budget I am going to recommend that you stay at Ibis Styles, It is a block away from Khaosan, so much quieter, has a pretty happening street, the beds are comfy and the pool is awesome.
If you are on a budget and want somewhere cheap and not in a hostel near Khaosan Road you can stay at D&D Inn on Khaosan Road. We checked that box and stayed their once. If you want to stay in the action and plan on partying this is the hotel for you. Just a small warning you can hear the music in your hotel room, bring earplugs!
Street Food on Khaosan Road - Get your taste buds ready there is so much to eat! Rather you are eating drunkin Thai noodles, crab omelet, curry, or fried insects be ready to indulge. This is the time to get out of your comfort zone and live beyond the click! Our family motto is to try everything once.
Booze On Khaosan Road - If you like to party, you can party on Khaosan Road. From beers to buckets of liquor you can get crunk! You will find plenty of places to dance! (fist pump) I am not sure what time the bars and clubs close but the party seems to last into the wee hours of the morning.
Buddhist Temples - From Wat Phra Kaew to Wat Thepthidaram be prepared to be amazed by the beauty of the temples. The temples are a must-see and part of the capital's heart and soul. You cannot visit Bangkok without visiting a few temples. The temple itself is absolutely beautiful and the chance of you seeing a monk is pretty darn good.
There are a few things you need to know prior to visiting the temples. I am going to suggest that you get up early and beat the crowd to the temples. If you are staying near Khaosan Road, you can actually walk to a few temples. Temples are a sacred place and you should always show respect. Dress appropriately, No shorts or short skirts or revealing tops. You are going to want to remove your shoes, hats, and sunglasses prior to entering the temple. Once you are inside people are going to be praying and meditating, it is important to show respect and remain silent. Don't forget to put your phone on silent and ask prior to taking pictures.
There is so much to do on or near Khaosan Road. You can shop the street stalls, sip cocktails on a rooftop bar, get fitted for a custom suit, take a boat taxi tour, or hop in a tuk-tuk. I would say Khaosan Road has something for everyone and it is a must-see when visiting Thailand.
